Graduates

Water is a learning curve.

Supplying water to millions of people in what is the driest region in the country means we have to be innovative. We have to keep pushing the boundaries and approach challenges from different angles.

That’s why we always embrace fresh perspectives. And it’s why, as a graduate with us, your ideas will be highly valued.

You can also expect to be part of an environment where learning is celebrated – people here love to push themselves and we make sure they have the training and development they need to do exactly that.

By joining us, you’ll help us to raise awareness of the importance of water. And whether you’re collaborating with customers, your colleagues or our communities, you’ll play your own part in building a secure future for our region’s water.

Welcome to Anglian Water Country – and the kind of exciting challenges that will push you like never before.

Tash
Catchment & Environmental Regulation Manager

I wanted to work for a company that delivered an important service to our society while making a positive impact on the environment.

I lead a team of experts who regulate and manage activities associated with trade effluent, environmental discharges, and waste for the whole AW region. Our work focuses on how these activities could impact the environment and our ability to protect it. We do this by ensuring compliance with environmental regulations, obtaining permission from our regulators, and collaborating with external stakeholders such as the Environment Agency and Defra.

To be a successful operational leader you will need to be interested in people and the environment and be flexible to working in a world of constantly changing priorities.

Anglian water is genuinely interested in developing graduates who are passionate about what we do. There are so many different and attractive development opportunities here which brings interest and variety to whatever role you decide to do.

Make the most out of your placements as you will get out what you put into them. They will also help you to decide where your interests lie and allow you to build a fantastic network of people doing a variety of roles with a huge range of knowledge and experience.

We want you to do well and we will celebrate your successes with you!

The best thing about the role is looking forward each day to working with a fantastic team who are as passionate about what we do as I am. It is so rewarding when we collaborate to deliver excellent customer service while finding ways to protect and enhance our environment.

Bethany
Shop Window Project and Engagement Manager

“After studying Geography at Loughborough University, I joined the Generalist Graduate Scheme. I liked the idea of experiencing different areas.

There are plenty of training and development opportunities open to you on the graduate scheme. And in the two roles I’ve done since, that’s continued – I’ve just finished a professional project management course which will give me a formal qualification.

Last year, I was working as the Responsible Business of the Year Project Manager. A large part of the role was organising a Gala Dinner at the Royal Albert Hall.

“Seeing months of hard work and ideas come to fruition on a world-famous stage was incredible.”

My day-to-day role now mainly revolves around progressing a number of projects. A few of the areas I’m focusing on are household water-efficiency products and technologies, working with vulnerable customers and Sustainable Drainage Systems (SuDS).

Being a young female in a male-dominated industry has definitely been a challenge but the balance is shifting. It’s empowering to be part of that change.”

Dean
Assistant Treatment Manager

“I studied Sport and Exercise Science at the University of Bedford. The Anglian Water graduate scheme appealed to me because of the development opportunities. I felt I’d be able to build a career with a very supportive and responsible business.

I also liked the fact that I’d develop management skills throughout the programme which I’d then put into practice at the end of the scheme. Not many people get the chance to spend time in as many parts of the business as I did, so I feel very lucky.

During my time with the Shop Window team, I was tasked with giving a presentation to an international water company. This was far out of my comfort zone but, with great support from the team, we managed to deliver the message well. Despite the fact they didn’t understand my Mandarin!

“I’ve been challenged to achieve more than I ever thought I was capable of.”

Being given the opportunity to then gain nationally recognised qualifications as well as gaining on-the-job work experience is invaluable. It also means you can offer fresh advice and ideas to the business – you can have a real impact.”

Hannah
Head of Water Resources

“When I was looking for a job after completing my MSc in Environmental Geochemistry, Anglian Water’s brand and ethos really aligned with my aspiration to work for a socially-responsible organisation. I felt I could have a direct and positive impact on society and the environment here.

I lead a team of around 25 technical specialists and engineers. We look after the security of our upstream water resources across the region. This involves everything from planning for population growth and climate change through to looking after our reservoirs.

“My expectations of Anglian Water being socially responsible have definitely been surpassed.”

We’re genuinely committed to positively impacting communities. One example is our community regeneration project in Wisbech which has led to a vision for a new garden town.

The training and development here have completely prepared me for this leadership role. In 2011, I joined the graduate scheme and have since completed a Leadership and Management Diploma and a two-year leadership development programme. It’s been pivotal and I apply learning from my training every single day.”

Our locations

After an initial induction period at one of our offices or sites, you’ll then progress through a series of rotational placements which could be based at any of our sites or offices. And because we also hold meetings and run training courses throughout the region, it’s important that you’re flexible about your location.

Events for students

We run a number of events for students interested in embarking on a graduate programme with us. If we don’t have any events listed, it’s because we’re not recruiting for graduate roles right now. However, you’re very welcome to come and meet us at any of the other early years careers events that are taking place in our region.
